Lately, recreation therapists have been expanding their scope of practice into park and recreation departments. This is due to several factors, including increased efforts to create an inclusive environment for all community members. Park and recreation patrons of all abilities and backgrounds are taking advantage of park and recreation facilities and programs, which creates a parallel between healthcare facilities and parks and community centers. link
RECREATION THERAPY & INCLUSION SERVICES
Lack of Knowledge. Many people are not able to realize their maximum leisure functioning because they lack essential information. Knowledge of programs, facilities, and other recreation and leisure resources, for example, is needed to make informed choices. Knowledge of support services, such as modes of transportation, also may be necessary for them to participate in a particular recreational activity.
Inclusive and special recreation : opportunities for persons with disabilities
Libraries have librarians to help patrons locate knowledge, most parks have no equivalent staff position
This is a sign that could be installed in a lot of NYC parks and playgrounds
I would like to see the Parks Department or the mayor's office of disabilities or the Department of Health have a employee with a degree in recreation therapy who does the following two functions
one is to create and maintain a website like the Para Parks website. Including constantly adding park activities ideas for each type of special need
The second is to take calls from park goers with special needs and d give them guidance on activities to enjoy in our parks
